No whining here!
Well I have to say that Whine & Cheese was unquestionably a success!

It started not too auspiciously. The staff turned up right on the dot of 8:00, resulting in our not having time to test the DJ equipment nor a cash drawer by the time the first punter arrived. And then there was the dispute over the free wine. The manager had agreed to share the cost of the free wine with me, but didn't tell the owner, who refused to honour that arrangement and charged me for all of it. I was not a happy camper -- but in the end, enough people turned up that we were able to easily cover it out of the door take.

Then there were the requisite technical fuckups, both of which were mine. In the booth there is a small, invisible step down right in front of the DJ equipment. Which, upon arriving for my first set, I stumbled over and fell onto the turntable, turning off Ally's track. EEK! I hastily played a tune, but (see "The staff didn't arrive until 8") I hadn't had any previous opportunity to figure out which buttons did what, resulting in a few seconds of silence between my first and second tracks and a panicked me shouting "Go get Ally, now!!" at a very confused [info]bluekieran who had just come in to say hello.

But it wouldn't be a club night without something going wrong. On the plus side, people actually showed up and, contrary to the owner's dire prediction, didn't just stay long enough to drink the free wine and then leave. [info]caveynik and [info]suicideally both played good sets, though I could have done without Belinda Carlisle*, and double the bite-our-nails-and-hope-we-break-even number of punters showed up -- around 80 total! People were still coming in at 10 til 1, mainly mundanes who coloured my second set far more "pop" than it would have been otherwise, but they were well-behaved and requested The Clash and Placebo so it was all good. The owner was happy, the music was well-received and so far the only complaint I've heard was "the dance floor was too small" so I think we WILL indeed be doing this again sometime! :)

I'm a cheapskate and can't do a poll, so those who attended please leave your commentary: how was the space? The music? The staff? Anything else?

THANK YOU to everyone who came, especially those who plugged the thing in their LJs or helped hand out flyers, and a "nyeah nyeah" to those who didn't because it was a great time!

Wish I had been there!

Was good to see you last night. Don't worry, I won't tell anyone you went to Full Tilt after the NFD gig...

I had a great time. I heard a lot of people say that they'd come to another. You made money. It's all good ;)

Oh, and I quite liked hearing Belinda Carlisle! Screw you ;)

had a great time, the music erred on the side of good-cheesy, the place itself was nice, the bar was well-stocked with nice things [although a little less well-stocked after w&c i think]... all in all, most enjoyable. will def attend next time if'n'when... :]

Hello Psyche! I really enjoyed Whine & Cheese (I came to tell you afterwards, but couldn't stay to chat as my friends were disappearing up the stairs). The music was great, and I do like the venue. It was such a blessing to have aircon, though I'm sure it was switched off after a while.

The dancefloor isn't too small if the bit in front of the stage is used as well - it was just the right size for the number of people. I'll definitely go if you run another one, and bring some more friends too.

I liked the staff; especially the girl who was heckling people for not dancing!

Hope to see you at another one soon.

YAY! Thank you for liking it! :)
Quote of the night, said by an exiting punter around 12:30: "Go quick, before it sucks us back in!"

Like everyone said, it was an excellent night: really looking forward to the next one! But keep it on a school night and stop it getting overcrowded like B-Movie.

Congrats on the success. I know exactly what you mean about the "biting you nails hoping to break even". I hate that.
